Kaina

Kaina is a quiet and picturesque traditional village, 28 km east from the city of Chania. It belongs to the municipality of Apokoronas and has 114 inhabitants.

It is located in the ancient city of Kainos or Kanos, one of the 147 ancient cities of Crete.

The village benefits from its position enjoying stunning views of the White Mountains.

There are plenty of walks in the area, and many buildings dating from the Turkish occupation. One can also find the church of Agios Antonios with its frescoes from the 14th century.

The Dionysian custom of the Camel that comes from depths of centuries revives each year on Ash Monday in Kaina village. The inhabitants of the village participate in the custom, starting very early with the preparations for the construction of the camel. The camel is made of a wooden ladder, two baskets that make up the two camel bends, an old rug and the skeleton of the head. The camel usually has three people. One holds the head fastened to a wood, and the other two with the help of the baskets form its bends. The camel tour is a special event for the village, which in addition to the locals gathers residents of other areas. It is accompanied by traditional treats, tsikoudia and Cretan music.

The bigger village of Vamos is a mere 5 minutes drive and offers plenty of amenities like taverns, mini market, post, bank, school etc. The drive to the town of Chania is about 30 minutes.
