Paleochora

Paleochora is a small town situated approximately 70 kilometers from the town of Chania and a 90-minute drive from Chania International Airport.

It is located on the southwest coastline of Crete and it's built on a small peninsula of 400m width and 700m length. The town is set along 11 km of coastline bordering the Libyan Sea. It is built on the ruins of the ancient city of Kalamydi. It is the capital town of the municipality of Pelekanos.

Paleochora's economy is based on tourism and agriculture. It is a relaxing holiday destination since the early 1970s when it was popular with hippies. Paleochora is currently one of the fastest growing tourist towns on Crete.

It is a "real" village with a constant population of about 2000. As it is quite lively it can sometimes be a little crowded in the high season but it is very easy to get away from the bustle.

In the summer months the main road crossing the village as well as the road along the eastern sea side are closed to the traffic in the evening. This is wonderful if you have children as they can run around with no danger at all.

Paleochora's wider area has crystal clear waters and beautiful long sandy beaches. They might sometimes be exposed to the West winds but there are several other pebble beaches that are much more protected.

Facilities to be found include bank branches, a post office, a central telephone office, a health centre, doctor's offices, dentists, chemists, a police station, a coast guard and customs office, and many types of stores. Ferry boats connecting the town with Sougia, Agia Roumeli, Loutro, Chora Sfakion and Gavdos dock in the local harbor.

The journey to Paleochora will reward you with breathtaking landscapes and is absolutely worth it.

Paleochora enjoys a smooth climate all year round making it an ideal destination to visit both in the summer and winter. It is a paradise for all type of holiday seekers: From adventure lovers, to the night owls as well as families seeking for a relaxing holiday in Crete.
