Situated on the popular peninsula of Akortiri in West Crete, the village of Horafakia, or Chorafakia, is an ideal base to explore the area.
Horafakia is located 11 kilometers from Chania city and 7 kilometers from the airport of Chania. The village itself has a few every day amenities and traditional tavernas, but it is also close to the larger village of Kounoupidiana, which has all the amenities needed for day to day living, including supermarkets, banks, cinema and bowling, tavernas and shops.
The sandy coves and beaches of Akrotiri are all within easy reach, as is the famous beach of Stavros, a location in the film Zorba the Greek, and the beach at Marathi, popular with locals and day trippers alike. The beautiful sandy beach of Kalathas is just a few minutes' drive. Parasols and sun loungers are available and in the bay, opposite to the beach, is a small island that is accessible by swimming. Here all kinds of water sports such as windsurfing, water skiing, canoeing and diving can be done. Near the beach are several taverns and restaurants serving Cretan specialties and delicious seafood dishes.
Akrotiri is a fantastic place to explore - follow the coastal road past quiet sandy coves and soaring mountains, stopping at a beachside taverna along the way for a traditional Greek lunch or refreshing drink. Visit many of the local monasteries such as Gouverneto and Agia Triada, including one located deep in a gorge (St John The Hermit), take a stroll along one of the many trails or visit the beautifully maintained Allied War Memorial Cemetery at Souda.
Horafakia is easy accessible from the Venetian town of Chania and the airport, yet located far enough away from the hustle and bustle to enjoy village life or a relaxing holiday.
