Voukolies

Voukolies is a village with great history and tradition, located 27 kilometers from the city of Chania. This place had always been widely known for the commercial activities of its inhabitants.

Since the Turkish occupation, a large bazaar takes place in the main square of the village every week, selling traditional local products. It initially started as a trading organization, later it became a place of reunion of relatives and acquaintances from the surrounding villages. It used to be a place where girls from the surrounding villages were getting to meet their future husband. The first references to the bazaar of Voukolies were made in the 19th century.

Beautiful villages surround Voukolies and hiking is popular in the region. The route Voukolies- Ano Kefala- Sebronas- Palea Roumata is a lovely route along the running waters of Tavronitis. No tourist facilities are found in Voukolies or the surrounding villages. The closest facilities are in the seaside villages of Kolimbari, Maleme and Platanias at 10 minutes drive.

A famous monument at Voukolies on the road to Paleohora, is the Tower built by the Turks in 1866. The Turks used it to consolidate their position and even until today you can see remnants of the Tower.

The residents of Voukolies are mainly occupied in agriculture and animal husbandry since the Valley of Tavronitis River, in which their village is built, is a very fertile place.

The village offers many amenities including supermarkets, bank, bakery, pharmacy, tavernas, and cafes. There is easy access to the national highway from where the historical city of Chania is just a 30-minute drive and the airport 45 minutes.

Within a 10-minute drive is the village of Tavronitis with its nice pebble beach, which is part of the vast beach that runs from Kolimbari to Chania. Near the beach are a couple of tavernas and restaurants, while in the village you can find many amenities including shops, tavernas, cafes, baker and butcher.

Voukolies and Tavronitis are active, working villages which do not shut down during the winter. They have all amenities and facilities all year round.
